Introduction to Dating in UK. Learn
Dating in UK basics.
Dating is a form of courtship,
and includes any social activity undertaken by, typically, two people
with the aim of each assessing the other's suitability as their partner
in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. It is the act of meeting and
engaging in some mutually agreed upon social activity. Traditional
dating activities involve entertainment or a meal. Dating place can be
like shopping malls, pubs, multiplexes, restaurants or discotheques. In
many cultural traditions, a date may be arranged by a third party, who
may be a family member, acquaintance, or professional matchmaker.
Lately, internet dating has become popular.

Although dating etiquette has
become more relaxed during the twentieth century, there are considerable
differences between social and personal values. For example, when an
activity costs money (for example, a meal), traditionally the man was
expected to pay; but in recent times the practice of splitting the
expenses has become more common and more acceptable.
The average duration of
courtship before proceeding to engagement or marriage varies
considerably throughout the world. Dating may not be essentially for
engaging into a long-term relationship, it may be for fun or to be in
some short-term relation also.
There are various systems
for organizing dates which include:
1.Online
dating:
In an online dating system, instead of using a traditional matchmaker,
dating uses specifically targeted websites to meet new people.
2.Speed
dating:
It involves a group of people get together for several hours in public;
each one is given a set amount of time to sit and talk to a particular
person before moving on to the next. It is more efficient in the sense
that one can select his or her match from a pool of dates according to
his or her likes and dislikes.
3.Mobile
dating/cell phone dating:
Here text messages to and from a mobile/cell phone carrier are used to
show interest in others on the system. Can be web-based or online dating
as well depending on the company.
4.Virtual
dating:
It is a combination of video game playing and dating, where users create
avatars and spend time in virtual worlds in an attempt to meet other
avatars with the purpose of meeting for potential dates.
5.Singles
events:
Here a group of singles are brought together to take part in various
events for the purposes of meeting new people. Events can include such
things as parties, workshops and games.
6.Blind
date:
Where the people involved have not met each other previously. The match
could have been arranged by mutual friends, relatives or by a dating
system. In a blind date, two unknown persons meet each other typically
in a restaurant or café and discuss each other’s hobbies and interests
and try to know each other.
7.Group
dating:
Group dating is a modern pattern for dating where a group of
single men and a group of single women organize a night out, with the
hope of forming romantic partnerships. Group dating can be found in many
countries including Japan where “compa”, as it is known there, is very
ritualized and unique. Generally, a single guy and girl who know each
other organize the compa in advance, each agreeing to bring 3 or 4
eligible friends.

The venue is usually a
restaurant, izakaya, or anywhere people can eat, drink and make a bit of
noise. In other cultures, group dating
is becoming more popular as a safe alternative to single dating
(especially blind dating), also helping to ease tension, since both
parties will feel more comfortable having the company of their friends.
Group dating is often recommended by parenting experts as more age
appropriate form of dating for preteens then one on one dating. |
